Controversy and Clarity: Lil' Kim's Altered Magazine Cover Sparks Debate

Lil' Kim's recent magazine cover has stirred up quite a storm on the internet, but not in the way she might have hoped. The '90s rap icon, known for her ever-evolving physical appearance, seems to have pushed the boundaries with her latest look.

Ebony magazine unveiled its "Fall 2023 Hip-Hop 50" cover, featuring Lil' Kim as the focal point, and it took fans by surprise. She graced the cover in a pink silk ensemble, sporting a gold leaf laurel wreath atop her head, giving off a regal aura.

While the magazine aimed to pay homage to one of rap's female pioneers, numerous online critics contended that the photograph did not accurately represent her true appearance. In the image, Lil' Kim's face appeared notably smoothed out, with sharper nose, jawline, and cheekbones compared to her usual Instagram selfies. Her skin also seemed lighter and smoother than what fans were accustomed to seeing.

Social media users wasted no time in calling out the publication for what seemed like heavy photo retouching, to the extent that Lil' Kim looked unrecognizable.

"Lil Kim ain't even looking like Lil Kim anymore."

"As a publication, you should know what's unacceptable. This cover is not it and doesn't represent Kim or the magazine well."

"This HAS to be AI because that looks nowhere near Lil Kim."

One fan even questioned the photographer responsible, asking, "Who photographed this?"

To the chagrin of the commenters, the director of photography for the shoot, Keith Major, stepped forward to provide some insight into why Lil' Kim's photo appeared significantly altered. He revealed, "Man, she wanted to be in control of the retouching, so this is what we got."

Major, known for his celebrity photography and past work with Ebony, didn't seem to hit the mark with this particular photoshoot, as per fans' reactions.

Hours later, Lil' Kim herself addressed the controversy surrounding the alleged heavy retouching of the cover image, offering a different version of events from the photographer's explanation. She posted an Instagram story stating, "Who is this?! Because that's not the photo I approved or any other content they've put out. I always told Ebony it looked like a painting but they didn't wanna listen."

She continued, "It's the sabotage for me. The funny s–t about this is that this is THEIR retoucher!"

Lil' Kim also shared a screenshot from someone named Raisaz, who accused Major of being dishonest about the behind-the-scenes details. Raisaz's post read, "@keithmajor How about we talk about how your photos' exposure was so low we couldn't even salvage them. At the end of the day, it was EBONY's retouchers who edited the photo. I also heard you got fired after this s–t. Let's talk about that, sir."

Lil' Kim added, "Thank U @rayeesuh talk that real s–t!" over her screenshot.

The public has long been intrigued by Lil' Kim's evolving physical appearance, witnessing changes in her skin complexion, facial structure, and nose shape over the years. However, the 49-year-old rapper has never shied away from discussing her multiple plastic surgeries. In a 2000 interview with Newsweek, she openly admitted to having low self-esteem due to past relationships, saying, "I have low self-esteem and I always have."

Regardless of her self-esteem struggles in the past, Lil' Kim's influence as an artist has paved the way for other women in the male-dominated hip-hop industry. Her iconic red-carpet looks and luxurious fashion sense continue to be celebrated and emulated in trendy videos, fashion shows, and star-studded events.
