Safari Park Embraces Arrival of 5-Year-Old Endangered Giraffe

On a Wednesday, Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park, nestled near Stirling, introduced a new member to its family, Sifa, a five-year-old Rothschild's giraffe. This addition is particularly significant as it sheds light on the dire state of Rothschild's giraffes in the wild, with an estimated global population of only about 2,000 individuals.

Sifa's arrival at the park occurred around 8 pm on a Wednesday, following a lengthy journey from Dublin Zoo. Notably, he is the first male giraffe to find a home at Blair Drummond in over a decade. Sifa's journey wasn't a straightforward one; it involved a sea crossing from Dublin to Holyhead, followed by a 337-mile journey north to his new home.

Upon arrival, Sifa had the opportunity to meet his new companions, Harriet, Bella, and Ruby, and the park is delighted to report that the quartet has already begun to form a harmonious bond.

The global giraffe population, encompassing all giraffe species, has experienced a disheartening decline of approximately 30% since the 1980s. Recent estimates suggest that there are now only around 117,000 giraffes left in their natural habitats, underscoring the urgency of conservation efforts.

Suzi Marshall, the team leader for large mammals at Blair Drummond Safari Park, expressed her excitement at the park's new addition, stating, "We are thrilled to welcome a new male into our giraffe tower. We are used to having an all-female group, so we were a bit taken aback by how tall he is; he's a good couple of feet taller than all our girls. We wanted to make him feel welcome as soon as he arrived, so we laid out a delicious dinner of willow. He made himself right at home and started tucking in right away."

This heartwarming story not only highlights the park's commitment to conservation but also emphasizes the importance of safeguarding these majestic creatures in the wild.
