In 2023, the musicians of The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square are embracing a global journey, marked by the phrase "throughout the world." This year, they embarked on a multi-city, multi-year tour in Mexico, collaborated with international singers during the general conference, expanded their "Music & the Spoken Word" broadcast for Spanish-speaking audiences, released new music, and participated in numerous concerts. This article provides updates on these initiatives and other events involving the Tabernacle Choir, Orchestra, and Bells at Temple Square.

Revamped Mission Statement and Pilot Programs

In November 2022, the choir's presidency, consisting of President Michael O. Leavitt and counselors President L. Whitney Clayton and President Gary B. Porter, introduced changes to the organization's mission statement. The updated mission emphasizes their commitment to inspiring people "throughout the world" to connect with the divine and experience God's love.

Three pilot programs were also announced. The first aims to expand "Music & the Spoken Word" into foreign languages, starting with Spanish and Portuguese. Native speakers will present the "Spoken Word" messages, accompanied by graphics reflecting various geographies. The second program involves altering the choir and orchestra's travel plans, opting for shorter, more frequent assignments, allowing for annual tours. The pilot of this new approach took place in Mexico City in June. The third pilot project seeks to make the choir more globally representative by inviting qualified Latter-day Saint singers from various regions to audition for opportunities during the April 2023 general conference.

International Singers at General Conference

During the April 2023 general conference, 10 singers from six countries had the unique opportunity to join the Tabernacle Choir. This marked the first time that international singers performed alongside the choir during a general conference session. These talented individuals, hailing from Brazil, Ghana, Malaysia, Mexico, the Philippines, and Taiwan, underwent virtual auditions and rehearsals before joining the choir in Salt Lake City. Their contributions added a global dimension to the conference's musical offerings.

Tabernacle Choir's Global Tour Begins in Mexico

The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra embarked on a significant global tour in Mexico, performing in multiple cities to spread hope and inspiration. Notably, they performed in the National Auditorium in Mexico City, Mexico, and the Toluca Cathedral in Toluca, Mexico. These concerts featured guest artists and were streamed to numerous locations across Mexico, fostering a strong connection between the choir and local communities. This tour marked a historic return to Mexico after 51 years, reinforcing the choir's commitment to building lasting friendships and sharing their message of faith and unity.

"Music & the Spoken Word" Expands to Spanish and Portuguese

The Tabernacle Choir introduced a pilot program to broadcast "Music & the Spoken Word" in Spanish. With Spanish-speaking narrators and culturally relevant content, this program aims to engage a broader audience. It is available on various platforms, including the Tabernacle Choir's Spanish YouTube channel and several Spanish-language television and radio stations. Plans are also in place to expand this initiative to Portuguese-speaking audiences.

New Music Releases and Collaboration with the Piano Guys

In 2023, the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra collaborated with renowned pianist Jon Schmidt and cellist Steven Sharp Nelson of the Piano Guys on four music videos. These videos include powerful renditions of American folk hymns and other inspirational compositions. Additionally, the choir released several singles, including "Because of Him" and "A Lullaby," each conveying messages of hope and faith.

Tabernacle Choir Concerts and Organ Performances

The Tabernacle Choir hosted various concerts, including a summer concert paying tribute to Latin American pioneers, a Tanner Gift of Music concert featuring Felix Mendelssohn's "Elijah," and several organ performances showcasing the talents of Tabernacle and Temple Square organists. These events aimed to provide uplifting experiences for audiences and further the choir's mission.

Bells at Temple Square

The 33-member handbell choir, known as "Bells at Temple Square," performed a diverse repertoire during its "Bells in Motion" spring concert. The program featured classical pieces, hymns, and popular tunes, captivating audiences with its musical diversity and excellence.

In summary, 2023 has been a year of significant expansion and outreach for The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square. They have embraced a global mission, connecting with audiences worldwide through innovative initiatives, international collaborations, and inspiring performances.
