Australia's Rialto and the UK's Vertigo Releasing have taken their three-year partnership to the next level by jointly establishing Galaxy Pictures, a new film distribution company catering to audiences in Australia and New Zealand. Galaxy Pictures' mission is to specialize in star-studded, commercially appealing films, strategically positioned to resonate with viewers in an increasingly digital entertainment landscape.

This collaboration isn't new, as both companies have previously worked together, co-handling an impressive portfolio of 120 titles. Their successful teamwork includes the distribution of notable films such as "Honest Thief," "Boss Level," "Ainbo: Amazon Princess," "Dreambuilders," "The Misfits," and "Cosmic Sin."

Looking ahead to 2024, Galaxy Pictures has an exciting slate of releases, including "Land of Bad," featuring the talents of Australia's Russell Crowe and Liam Hemsworth, "Long Legs," with the iconic Nicolas Cage, "Sleeping Dogs," starring Russell Crowe and Karen Gillan, "Armoured," a Sylvester Stallone-led project, "The Canterville Ghost," brought to life by Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, the culinary romance "The Taste of Things" (also known as "Pot Au Feu"), and "The Rule of Jenny," featuring John Lithgow and Australia's Geoffrey Rush.

Rupert Preston, the CEO of Vertigo Releasing, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, "We've released some cracking movies with Kelly and the team in the last 3 years, and with our strongest slate yet, it's absolutely the right time to launch Galaxy. There are exciting times ahead."

Kelly Rogers, CEO of Rialto, shared Preston's sentiment, saying, "We are delighted to formalize what is an amazing relationship with the best guys imaginable, who share our passion for film, and excitement in meeting the needs of this ever-evolving industry."

This announcement marks the second instance of a new distributor entering the Australia-New Zealand market in a matter of weeks, preceding the upcoming international Australian International Movie Convention. Just recently, Canada's VVS Films revealed its plans to launch operations Down Under, also with a Nicolas Cage title, "Dream Scenario."

The Australian theatrical market has exhibited a robust recovery post-COVID. However, it, like other segments of the Australian broadcast and streaming market, remains subject to potential major changes. As traditional studio business wanes, even Australia's major pay-TV company, Foxtel, is reinventing itself as a streaming service and aggregator, reflecting the dynamic nature of the industry.
