Jada Pinkett Smith Reveals Separate Living Arrangements with Will Smith Since 2016

Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith's marriage has seen significant changes since 2016, as revealed in an excerpt from Jada's memoir and a segment of her interview with Hoda Kotb on Today.

In her recently released book, "Worthy," Pinkett Smith openly discussed the status of their well-publicized union, clarifying that while they haven't legally divorced, their romantic relationship has come to an end. During a candid conversation with Hoda Kotb, the 52-year-old actress confirmed that there are no plans for an official divorce.

"I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce," she shared. "We will work through whatever. And I just haven't been able to break that promise."

Nevertheless, she acknowledged to Kotb that the couple has been "living separately" for several years. This separation predates the highly publicized incident at last year's Oscars when Smith, 55, slapped comedian Chris Rock over a joke related to Pinkett Smith's alopecia, an event that made headlines worldwide.

In a separate interview published in People, Pinkett Smith shed light on the Oscars slap, which led to Smith's suspension from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for a decade. She admitted, "I thought, 'This is a skit,' like many other viewers. She couldn't believe that Smith's actions were real, saying, "I was like, 'There's no way that Will hit him.'" It wasn't until her husband returned to his seat that she realized it wasn't a staged act.

Pinkett Smith shared that after the show, she spoke to Smith privately, expressing her concern for his well-being. "I'm going to be by his side," she said, "but also allow him to have to figure this out for himself."

As for their current marital status, Pinkett Smith mentioned that they are "still figuring it out." She emphasized their deep love for each other and their commitment to understanding what their relationship will look like moving forward.

In the wake of the Oscars incident, Smith resigned from the Academy's board and accepted a 10-year ban from Academy events, including the Oscars. In a statement, he acknowledged, "I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work."

The couple, who tied the knot in Baltimore in December 1997, has two adult children together, Jaden and Willow, in addition to Smith's son Trey from a previous marriage.
