Latest Developments Regarding NXT's Proposed Direction for Former WWE Star Mustafa Ali

Shawn Michaels expressed his astonishment at the unexpected release of Mustafa Ali. According to a recent report from Fightful Select, it has come to light that "The Heartbreak Kid" had ambitious plans for the former leader of Retribution. It was intended that Ali would secure victory and become the "WWE NXT" North American Champion at the No Mercy event scheduled for September 30.

Originally, Ali was scheduled to interfere in a North American Championship match involving Dragon Lee, setting the stage for a Triple Threat Match at the Premium Live Event where Ali was poised to emerge as the victor. However, Ali's abrupt release, which coincided with a wave of other main roster releases, including fellow "NXT" standout Dana Brooke, led to Trick Williams swiftly stepping into a match against the North American Champion, Dominik Mysterio. Ali's misfortune turned out to be Williams' stroke of luck, as Trick triumphed over "Dirty Dom" and clinched the coveted title.

It's worth noting that Ali had requested his release over a year ago, which WWE had initially declined. Nevertheless, Ali is now on track to become a free agent in 2024. Michaels, speaking highly of Ali following his release, believed that his time spent in "NXT" had prepared him for success outside of WWE. Ali had harbored hopes for his future within WWE, expressing his desire earlier this year to tell a "real story" within the company. He seemed to be on the verge of realizing that ambition in "NXT." This North American Title victory would have marked Ali's first championship reign, a significant milestone for the popular superstar who had undergone multiple character changes and unrealized creative ideas during his tenure in WWE.
