Kenwood: Join a captivating 2-mile hike amidst the breathtaking scenery of Sugarloaf Ridge State Park to spot one of the area's most engaging and social avian residents, the woodpecker. Accompanied by Sugarloaf docent Dana Glei, you'll uncover the art of identifying these splendid birds through sight, sound, flight patterns, and behavior. During this adventure, hikers may have the privilege of encountering various woodpecker species, including acorn woodpeckers, northern flickers, pileated woodpeckers, Nuttall’s woodpeckers, downy woodpeckers, hairy woodpeckers, and red-breasted sapsuckers. The rendezvous point is the White Barn, with the hike commencing at 8:30 a.m. and concluding at 11:30 a.m. The journey will encompass the enchanting Creekside and Hillside trails. Be sure to bring adequate water and wear comfortable attire suitable for layering, along with sturdy footwear. Binoculars, a scope, camera, and bird identification guides are welcome companions. Tickets are priced at $10, plus a nominal ticket fee, $5 for Sugarloaf volunteers and members, and children under 12 can join free of charge. Additionally, parking fees apply. Healdsburg: Extend a helping hand to LandPaths staff and volunteers as they embark on a trail-clearing mission at the expansive 400-acre Riddell Preserve during a volunteer workday. Together, you'll trim branches, remove small trees, and eradicate French broom shrubs to prepare the preserve for the approaching fire season. The action begins at 9 a.m. and lasts until 1:30 p.m. Meeting initially at the Healdsburg Corporation Yard parking lot, located at 550 Westside Road, participants will then caravan to the preserve.
