Jason Statham Candidly Discusses Sylvester Stallone's Reduced Part in Expendables 4: "Feels Off"

Jason Statham voiced his disappointment regarding Sylvester Stallone's reduced role in The Expendables 4, highlighting the profound impact Stallone's presence has on the set. Stallone, who played a central role in the franchise since its inception, took a step back in this latest installment, leading to Statham's candid reflections.

The Expendables franchise, initiated in 2010 with Stallone serving as director, screenwriter, and lead actor, revolves around a team of mercenaries embarking on high-stakes global missions. Stallone's pivotal involvement in previous entries made his diminished role in The Expendables 4 all the more conspicuous, as Statham now assumes a more prominent position.

During an interview with Cinema Express, Statham hinted at his longing for the days when Stallone played a more substantial role within the franchise. While Statham didn't delve into the reasons behind Stallone's reduced presence, he emphasized Stallone's integral role in The Expendables 4's ensemble. According to Statham, the best moments on set were when Stallone was part of the production, as he conveyed:

"In this particular story, he is absent for reasons we don't talk about, we have to guide ourselves through the ocean without him. There is something about not having him around that doesn't feel right. So, we are getting through, the story is the story, we are trying to do our best, but the best days are when he is on set."

Despite Barney Ross, Stallone's character, playing a significant role in the climax of The Expendables 4, he doesn't take the lead as he did in previous films. With Barney's absence from the physical action, the impact feels less potent than in earlier installments.

An Expendables film without Stallone in a prominent role feels somewhat unusual. Stallone, who was the driving force behind the franchise as its director, writer, and leading man in its inception, became synonymous with it. However, his reduced role was likely a consequence of creative differences that prompted his temporary withdrawal from the production process. This hiatus during development could account for his limited screen time in the movie.

Regrettably, The Expendables 4 has garnered an astonishingly low Rotten Tomatoes score, currently standing at a mere 16 percent. This critical reception could potentially jeopardize the franchise's future, depending on its impact on box office performance. The reviews have been harsh, pointing out issues such as subpar CGI, awkward editing, a lack of originality, and uninspiring storytelling. Given these negative assessments and the anticipated box office results, The Expendables 4 may mark the swan song for the franchise, leaving Statham yearning for more of Stallone's involvement.
