Erina Buchholz Takes the Helm as Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra's New Concertmaster for the 2023-24 Season

Terre Haute, Indiana - In an exciting development for classical music enthusiasts, Erina Buchholz has assumed the role of concertmaster for the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra (THSO) for the upcoming 2023-24 season. Buchholz, who previously held the position of principal second violin for the THSO during the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 seasons, steps into this esteemed role, succeeding Elina Rubio, who recently embarked on a new chapter with the Minnesota Orchestra following her remarkable tenure in Terre Haute.

Samantha Johnson-Helms, THSO's Executive Director and principal clarinetist, shared her enthusiasm for Buchholz's appointment, stating, "At our first rehearsal last night, she jumped right into the leadership role and provided invaluable guidance to the string section. Having been with us for two years, she immediately felt comfortable, and as our new concertmaster, she brings a refreshing energy that will invigorate our entire season."

For Buchholz, this momentous occasion marked a blend of nervousness and excitement leading up to the first rehearsal. "I wanted to know the entire score for the program beyond just the first violin part," she explained. "Once I got onstage, I was not nervous at all. I'm so happy — it feels good to be so involved in the music making."

Buchholz's journey into the world of music began at the tender age of 6, initially as a hobby. She attributes her start to her penchant for singing as a child, prompting her mother to enroll her in violin lessons, perhaps as a tactic to divert her from singing – a notion she humorously recalls.

During her high school years, Buchholz's commitment to music deepened as she studied under dedicated teachers and started contemplating a professional career in music. Currently pursuing a performer's diploma at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, she earned her bachelor of music in violin performance from IU last year as a Herman B. Wells Scholar. She continues to refine her skills under the tutelage of Kevork Mardirossian at IU. Buchholz successfully auditioned for the coveted concertmaster's position in July, impressing the selection panel with her exceptional talent.

Samantha Johnson-Helms praised Buchholz's accomplishments, saying, "It's really cool that she got the position at such an early age. She's shown the authority of someone 10 years older."

In addition to her role with the THSO, Buchholz serves as the assistant concertmaster of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic and holds a section violinist position with the Owensboro Symphony. Her previous affiliation includes membership with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra. Born and raised in Louisiana, Buchholz proudly holds dual citizenship in Japan and the United States.

David Bowden, THSO's artistic director and conductor, expressed his admiration for Buchholz, stating, "Erina is a passionate artist, a superb violinist, and an outstanding orchestra leader. We are proud to have her as our new concertmaster."

Erina Buchholz will make her debut as concertmaster on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Tilson Auditorium during the concert "Petersen Plays Grieg," featuring guest pianist Drew Petersen. Classical music enthusiasts are in for a treat as Buchholz's talent and leadership promise to elevate the THSO's performances in the upcoming season.
