For those seeking clarity about the future of DC Universe projects, James Gunn empathizes with the challenge of staying updated on the latest developments.

Gunn, who assumed the role of co-head of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran last year, recently took to Threads to address fan inquiries regarding the development of the new DC slate following the resolution of the writers' strike. This also included addressing questions from several months ago about whether actors from previous DC projects would reprise their roles and if the new universe would kick off with "Superman: Legacy," a project featuring Gunn directing David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. But first on the agenda is the animated series "Creature Commandos."

Gunn responded, "Nothing is canon until 'Creature Commandos' next year — a sort of appetizer to the DCU — & then a deeper dive into the universe with 'Superman: Legacy' after that. It's natural to want to understand everything all the time, but it's okay to feel a bit puzzled about what's happening in the DCU, considering that no one has seen anything from the DCU yet."

He went on to explain, "Yes, some actors will reprise characters they've portrayed in other stories, and some plot points might align with those from the myriad of films, shows, and animated projects that have emerged from DC in the past. But nothing is set in stone until 'Creature Commandos' and 'Legacy.'"

"Creature Commandos" marks the inauguration of Gunn and Safran's previously announced "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" saga within the DCU. The animated Max series, set to launch in 2024, will feature Viola Davis reprising her role as Amanda Waller, with voice actors Frank Grillo, Maria Bakalova, and David Harbour also contributing. Davis will also star in the live-action Max series titled "Waller," among the titles planned for this first chapter.

Responding to a fan query about how "Blue Beetle," the Warner Bros. film starring Xolo Maridueña that premiered theatrically last month, fits into these new plans, Gunn confirmed, "Xolo Maridueña will continue playing Blue Beetle in the DCU, just as Viola Davis will return as Amanda Waller, and John Cena will reprise his role as Peacemaker."

These statements validate hints previously dropped by Gunn concerning the future of DC characters introduced to film audiences. In a recent Instagram post, Gunn expressed that Maridueña's superhero, Jaime Reyes, would "be an amazing part of the DCU going forward!" Additionally, during a June episode of the "Inside of You" podcast, he revealed plans to focus on the second season of Cena's Max series, "Peacemaker," once work on "Superman: Legacy" had concluded.

Gunn's comments come after a challenging period for DC films, with "Shazam! Fury of the Gods," "The Flash," and "Blue Beetle" all falling short of box office expectations this year. "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" is set to hit theaters on December 20, marking the final film from the studio's previous leadership.
