Meet Jim Bille, a Raleigh-based artist with a passion for the spookiest holiday of the year - Halloween. In his own words, "I'm a big fan of Halloween. You get to get into the creatures, the monsters, the fun stuff about it."

Jim Bille's professional background lies in animation, but it was just seven years ago that he found inspiration to become a master pumpkin carver. Reflecting on this pivotal moment, he said, "I saw that and it's like, I've got to try it. So I grabbed a pumpkin and dug in." However, his first attempts were far from perfect. "I had no idea what I was doing because I had never really worked in clay or anything. And I made just horrible pumpkins."

Despite the initial setbacks, Jim persevered. He dedicated himself to practice, learning the art of shaping pumpkins into intricate designs and forms. For him, carving a pumpkin has become a therapeutic escape from his daily work as an animator. He explained in a video posted to his YouTube page, "I work on a computer all day, so my head is inside there, pushing a mouse around, sitting in front of a screen all day. I like to get out and work with my hands in the real world. Anytime you work with your hands, it's therapeutic, so this is a great outlet for that."

Now, Jim enjoys sharing his passion with others. During the fall season, you can often find him in the Triangle area, creating live pumpkin carvings for all to witness. He finds the most joy in introducing people, especially children, to the idea that pumpkins can be more than just the classic triangle-eyed, smiling face. He wants people to realize that there's a whole world of artistic possibilities within a pumpkin.

Jim's love for pumpkin carving has turned it into an annual tradition he eagerly anticipates. As he puts it, "Each one of these pumpkins is Christmas Eve because anything is inside there; you never know. The weather's gorgeous, the leaves are gorgeous. It's that time of year for spooky, creepy things, and I love all that. I look forward to it every year. A 10-month offseason and two months of hurry up and get it done because pumpkins are gone."

In conclusion, Jim Bille's journey from an animator to a master pumpkin carver is a story of passion and creativity, and he continues to spread the Halloween spirit through his extraordinary pumpkin carvings in Raleigh and beyond.
