Amidst the prolonged actors' strike, which has now reached 113 days, the film industry faces yet another release date adjustment. Fortunately, the latest change won't affect the year 2024, but Universal and DreamWorks Animation have decided to reschedule their live-action adaptation of the beloved animated movie, "How to Train Your Dragon."
The original release date of March 14, 2025, has been shifted to June 13, 2025. Universal had already reserved the latter date on the release calendar, ensuring a smooth transition. Interestingly, March 14, 2025, is now devoid of any wide film entries, while the new release date for "How to Train Your Dragon" currently shares the calendar with an untitled Pixar movie.
This live-action adaptation is the brainchild of Dean DeBlois, a three-time Oscar nominee who wrote and directed the entire Dragon trilogy, based on the bestselling book series by Cressida Cowell. The film's production is in the capable hands of three-time Oscar nominee Marc Platt, along with DeBlois and Emmy winner Adam Siegel.
The animated "How to Train Your Dragon" trilogy collectively grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide and earned numerous accolades, including four Oscar nominations and a Golden Globe win for "How to Train Your Dragon 2."
The story follows a young Viking with dreams of dragon hunting who forms an unlikely friendship with a young dragon, ultimately discovering that these creatures are more than they initially seem.
In addition to this release date update, Universal also announced an untitled event movie set for Wednesday, July 2, 2025.
As the industry grapples with the uncertainty brought about by the ongoing actors' strike, there are several untitled placeholders across the 2024 calendar. Whether these placeholders are temporary or permanent remains to be seen.
